Please don't be discouraged if you don't have everything! A lot of these items can be substituted by other things or are just there to make the process easier or faster. That doesn't mean that there isn't a way around them :)
I added links to all the products that I show for your convenience (I purchased all of them with my own money btw).
- Pins
- Handsewing needle
- Polyester thread
- Rotary cutter
- Fabric shears
- Seam ripper
- Zipper foot
- Chalk pen
- Frixxion Pen (disappears when ironed!)
- Fabric tape (I have elastic therapeutic tape here, but any kind of plaster tape is fine. it should be sticky and sewable)
- Aluminium wire (2mm = 12 gauge), any realtivliy soft pliable wire will work. Make sure it's not too thin, otherwise it will poke through the fabric!
- Wire cutters
- Tailor's ham
Bare bones variation (dare I say MacGyver?): (I did actually test if it works: here)
- Hand sewing needle
- Thread

Fabric Options
If you want to know why I chose some fabric types over others please read: Which materials should I choose?
Outside layer:
Woven cotton fabric (see here how different materials compare). First try raiding your closet, there might be hidden treasures :) then look at ordering something online.
Inside Layer:
Soft breathable materials such als viscose (if you don't know what that means: check your closet for soft and airy dresses/blouses, that feel fluid and cool to the touch -> they are probably viscose. Check the label to make sure. Maybe you were bored and sorted out your wardrobe already? There might be some salvagable materials in your donate pile!)
You might want to use some light weight fusible interfacing if you have trouble sewing flowy fabrics (or are inexperienced)

For the outside I would recommend tightly woven cotton. From left to right: Thin cotton twill, popline, cotton with a similar weave to a dish towel, pillow case |
See how tight the weave is? |
Cotton on the left, dish towel for comparison on the right. They have a similar structure but the fabric on the left is thinner and more breathable |
This is the pillow case, it's the thinnest option. |

Examples of viscose. It's a thin and easily creased material, but that won't stop us :) |
Filter Layer
Basically a cut up vacuum cleaner bag! Nothing fancy about it :)
Example of already cut out filter on the left |
- SURGICAL MASK UPGRADE
- MASK WITH BUILT IN FILTER
- MASK WITH EXCHANGABLE FILTER
- BASIC MASK (inkludes pointers for handsewing!)
